Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP)
Program Description
The Minnesota Family Investment Program, or MFIP, is the state's welfare reform program for low-income families with children. It includes both cash and food assistance. The purpose of MFIP is to help families transition to economic stability. MFIP parents are expected to work, and are supported in working. Most families can get cash assistance for only 60 months.
In July 2004, Minnesota will start a Divisionary Work Program (DWP) a short-term, intensive, work-focused program, to help families move immediately to work rather than go on welfare.
General Program Requirements
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of Minnesota, either pregnant or responsible for a child under 19 years of age, a US national, citizen, legal alien, or permanent resident, have low or very low income, and be either under-employed (working for very low wages), unemployed or about to become unemployed.
