A New Chance for Laid Off Workers
State-sponsored projects show laid-off workers that it's never too late to start again!
Getting laid off is one of the most stressful and emotionally trying events a worker can experience, one that can deal a great blow to his self-esteem, family life, and finances. And with the economy going on a gradual slide downward, those who are still struggling to make ends meet after a lay-off are finding it harder than ever to cope.
In an effort to help entrenched or dislocated workers, the government recently launched a number of Demonstration Projects, all of which are designed to help laid-off employees build a better career and future for themselves. Retraining and job placement services will be offered to those who qualify for the projects, which vary according to their respective category.
Four categories are currently being offered: "Entrepreneurship Opportunities for Dislocated Workers", "Getting Ahead of the Curve: Raising Educational/Skill Levels of Workers in Declining Industries", "Innovative Adult Learning Models for Dislocated Workers", and "Preventing Dislocations of TANF Recipients Moving Into Entry Level Jobs Subject to Economic Churn".
To qualify, you must be a dislocated worker, which means that you have been terminated or laid off because of a permanent plant closure or a substantial lay-off. Other valid reasons for termination include the appearance of foreign competition in your workplace, or lowered demand for your skills or areas of specialization.
You are also considered a dislocated worker if a natural disaster or a failing economy has cost you your job, or if you are a displaced homemaker who isn't employed, or is in a job that doesn't pay enough to support your household.
