An Opportunity To Go Around The World
Government program for you to travel and be exposed to other cultures
If you’re interested with cultures different from our own and working in the government, then apply to receive a Boren Award. These awards are granted given that recipients work in the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, State or the Intelligence Community, or any federal agency with national security responsibilities.
Studying the language of another culture is an integral part of the program, where the primary intention is to learn, first-hand, the issues of foreign lands for the enhancement of our national security. Concerns included with such are military, political, environmental, and social.
Undergraduates can apply for a Boren Scholarship, awarding $20,000 of funding, and post-graduates can apply for a Boren Fellowship, which awards $30,000. Both plans allow you to go to places like Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
Current graduate students who have advanced knowledge of foreign languages like Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Hindi, Persian, or Central Asian, can apply for the ‘National Flagship Language Program’ to further enhance understanding of the language they already know and give them the opportunity to immerse themselves in another culture. Depending on the applicant’s handle of the foreign language, the Flagship institutions may grant a bypass and directly advance the applicant the one-year study overseas. Otherwise, one year is spent domestically then the next, overseas.
General eligibility requirements include the attainment of U.S. citizenship by the time an application is considered, being a high school graduate at the least, and the desire to study cultures that are applicable.
These services are offered by the ‘National Security Education Program’ which political figure David L. Boren sponsored.
