Benefits For Older And Visually Impaired Citizens
Relive days of better eyesight if you’re 55 and up
Eyesight deterioration is commonplace when a person grows of age. Severe cases of this cause complete blindness for some, which is additional trouble for our struggling seniors.
It’s pleasing to know there are services out there that cater to the visually-impaired. The ‘Independent Living Services for Older Individuals Who are Blind’ is one program designed to help people who are aged 55 and above who are visually-impaired, to adjust to their condition and live happy lives.
There is a wide range of services offered like outreach, visual screening, therapeutic treatment, provision of eyeglasses, provision of other vision aids, transportation, guide services, orientation and mobility services, Braille instruction, reader services, information and referral peer counseling, and adaptive skills training.
To qualify, you or someone in your family must have an eye condition that prevents independent living in the family or accomplishment of effective job performance, having an age of 55 or older.
In 1993, over 12,000 people were able to benefit from these services.
