Clean Buses For Cleaner Breathing Air
Replace polluting buses with eco-friendlier ones and reduce the risk of lung disease
Smoke-belchers are a pain to both health and environment. Buses, for one, emit huge amounts of exhaust due to their massive size. The Clean Fuels program was established to address these concerns.
The project includes the purchase or lease of clean-fuel buses, the construction of electrical recharging facilities or related equipment for similar buses, and the construction or improvement of public transportation facilities to accommodate green buses.
These buses are powered by compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, biodiesel fuels, batteries, alcohol-based fuels, hybrid electric systems, fuel cells, clean diesel (to an extent allowable by law), or other gases that use low or zero-emission technology.
Eligible applicants are States, municipalities, public agencies, public corporations, boards, and commissions established under State law. Applicants must also have legal, financial, and technical means to carry out the project and maintain facilities and equipments. Applicants must operate in an urban area designated as a maintenance area for carbon monoxide or ozone. If the area has a population below 200,000, then the State will act as a recipient in behalf of it.
Average financial assistance amounts to $1,112,000.
