Compensation For Purged Livestock
The USDA will pay owners of destroyed disease-carrying livestock
News has surfaced before of deaths from digesting chicken with Avian Flu, since then, extensive inspection on poultry and other livestock has been made to fully eliminate recurrences of such a dreadful incident.
Once identified and separated from the group, the next step is to destroy the bunch to avoid the spread of the disease among animals. However, it follows that owners and farmers have suffered losses. This is why the government came up with the Avian Influenza Indemnity Program to compensate farmers for their loss.
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the Department of Agriculture administers this program to track down livestock with diseases like foot-and-mouth, pleuropneumonia, rinderpest, exotic Newcastle, highly pathogenic avian influenza, infectious salmon anemia, and other similar communicable diseases.
The general payment formula is based on paying the farmer per animal from production in the previous year, and the number of animals disposed due to diseases. Payments are made by check or direct deposit.
Claims of destroyed livestock must be presented to the APHIS by submitting a form approved by the administrator, before determining eligibility to receive compensation.
