Education For All -- Including The Homeless
Program to give equal educational opportunities to homeless kids
Education is everyone’s right, and should be readily accessible regardless of financial situations. People start to make something of themselves by getting a good education.
The ‘McKinney-Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program’ promotes free and appropriate public education (FAPE). The program is designed to establish an office in each State education agency (SEA) to coordinate education for homeless children as well as implement programs for school personnel to better understand the needs of these children. Problems like transportation needs, lack of birth & school records, immunization, residency issues, and guardianship are addressed in the process.
States give sub-grants to local education agencies (LEA) to makes sure these kids get enrolled, attend classes, and achieve academic success. LEAs also collaborate with other local agencies to provide much-needed services to homeless children and their families.
Call 1-800-872-5327 or visit www.ed.gov/programs/homeless/index.html to find out if there is a local educational agency in your area which can help your child gain a foothold in a school which may very well make all the difference in your child’s future.
