Fellowship Opportunity for Jefferson Scholars
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation offers scholars all over the chance to get a fellowship grant for their book manuscripts.
Even if it's been centuries since Thomas Jefferson first cemented his reputation as a champion of liberty, his legacy as an exemplary statesman lives on to this very day. One of the ways through which his name carries on is the range of grants, scholarships, and fellowship programs that have been created in his honor. Since 1995, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has supported more than 220 scholars at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies (ICJS).
The Gilder Lehrman Junior Research Fellowship is one of the programs offered at the ICJS, and is open to all scholars who want to devote their time on projects that center on the work of Thomas Jefferson. Chosen fellows will be expected to do research and writing tasks on a line of topics directly related to the former president, the historical setting in which he worked, and his continuing legacy. The award is designed to help fellows revise their existing book manuscripts, but candidates who want to pursue original research on the topics will also be considered.
Fellows will enjoy a stipend of $35,000 for a total of nine months, and will have his or her own office in the Foundation's Jefferson Library. Fellows also get the opportunity to participate in relevant conferences, seminars, and other such scholarly activities. In addition, the University of Virginia Press will consider manuscripts authored by fellows in the Jeffersonian America Series.
Applicants must submit a book-length manuscript, an updated CV, a brief description of the proposed project, among others. The required documents must be sent to the ICJS, from which further information can be requested. The application deadline is fixed at November 1, 2008, and awards will be announced before February of the following year.
