Find Help to Pay For Your Prescription Drugs

Several options available

You may be a veteran, a senior citizen, someone with disabilities and special needs who has limited resources and mounting prescription expenses. You may be a person who, even if you aren't using a lot of prescription drugs right now, thinks ahead to protect yourself from unexpected prescription costs in the future.

Well, don't fret. You can get help with paying for your prescription drugs. Here are some of your options.

Medicare or Medicaid Coverage

These major government-run health programs include prescription drug assistance. You may contact the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to get information about government-run healthcare programs and referrals to state agencies that run these programs. For Medicare assistance, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Please note that Medicaid is a state administered program. Contact your State Health department for guidelines regarding eligibility and services in your area.

Extra Help from Social Security

Medicare beneficiaries with limited income or resources can get additional assistance from the Social Security Administration (SSA). You can call 1-800-772-1213 to find out if you're eligible.

Discount Cards from Drug Companies

There is an organization of groups and individuals involved in health care called the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America that offers Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA). They help eligible patients who do not have enough coverage to get the medicines they need through an appropriate public or private program. They may be able to connect you to the drug company that produces your medicines so you can get discounts or other benefits. You may reach PPA toll-free at 1-888-4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669).

Your State Social Services

Your local State Social Services agency can provide direct assistance to you or refer you to other local health organizations that may be able to help you.

Veteran Programs

The Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has many programs designed to assist veterans, such as Pharmacy Benefits. If you are a veteran, you may also want to contact VA at 1-877-222-8387 for more information.

Help for Senior Citizens

If you are a senior citizen, you may also want to contact the Administration on Aging's (AOA) Eldercare Locator, a free public service that can put you in contact with resources and programs designed to help the elderly in your community. Eldercare Locator information specialists are available to speak to you at their toll-free number, 1-800-677-1116.
