Free Food for Women, Children, and Seniors

A state-sponsored program provides free, nutritious food to the country's most vulnerable individuals.

If you think that the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is the only food aid program that caters to the dietary needs of women and children, think again. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a whole range of food assistance and distribution programs that target the most vulnerable and needy individuals, including mothers, their infants, and senior citizens.

One such program is the state-funded Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides USDA commodity food to infants, children, low-income women who are pregnant or who have just given birth, and even senior citizens who are at least 60 years old. The CSFP was designed to boost the health and improve the nutrition intake of eligible women, children, and elderly people through the distribution of healthful food to them, usually through public or non-profit state agencies.

Unlike the WIC program, the CSFP doesn't make use of food vouchers; instead, actual food is distributed to the program's participants. Qualified women, children, and seniors are offered a line of nutritious food products, such as infant formula, milk, juice, farina, cereal, rice, oats, pasta, and canned meat or veggies. Funding for the program is also quite solid, with Congress channeling more than $100 million to the CSFP for the fiscal year 2007.

To find out if you're eligible, contact the local state agency that administers the program. You'll most likely find the information you need from departments of health, education, agriculture, or social services, all of which are responsible for determining who receives assistance from the program.
