Get Delicious, Healthy Lunches at School for Free

Here's a reminder about all the free, nutritious food that children can get right in their own schools!

As the Beijing Olympics kicks into high gear this month, the rest of the world can't wait to see which athletes will eventually come out victorious. But people like Michael Phelps didn't just get to the Beijing Olympics by accident -- it took him years of hard work, training, and proper conditioning to be one of the world's best swimmers. And even though your kids don't plan to become world-class athletes, they still need as much nutrition to stay active and smart, especially now that school is back.

If you're worried about how you can afford to give your kids all the healthful lunches they'll need in school, fret no more. That's exactly what the National School Lunch Program is for, and the best thing about it is that it provides children from low-income families with nutritious, tasty lunches for free or at discounted prices. The program serves over 30 million children in public and private non-profit schools across the country, whether they're in primary school, grade school, or even in high school.

Your child is eligible for free lunches from the National School Lunch Program if your household earns an annual income that's below 130 percent of the poverty level. Other kids who come from higher-earning households are still covered by the NSLP, but they get discounted meals instead of free ones.

Get in touch with school officials to find out if they're part of the program, or contact your local USDA office to find out if your child qualifies for free meals. After all, athletes aren't the only ones who require good nutrition, and your kid deserves the best when it comes to his health.
