A way for the less fortunate to obtain a decent meal

If you’re worried that you may not be able to grab something to eat in the day, keep your head up.  There is a program that will take away hungry days.  It’s 'The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP),' and you will be serviced as long as you’re homeless, unemployed, or low-income.

The USDA or U.S. Department of Agriculture buys the food, including the processing and packaging, and ships it inside the States.  The amount depends on the demand of the State.  When finalized, State agencies decide the administration and distribution step.  Local agencies are then selected to do direct distributions to households or have other local agencies that are designated for the job to serve meals.

Provided commodities are diverse and plenty, which all plays a role to provide optimal nutrition, based on food standards, to the less fortunate.  The foods available in the spectrum are vegetables, meats, dry beans, fruits, juices, cereals, oats, rice, among others.

Public and private non-profit organizations that distribute food and commodities for the needy are eligible to apply.  Beneficiaries may be homeless, unemployed, or low-income senior citizens.  Most eligibility requirements are established by each State and their criteria are usually based on income standards or a beneficiary’s involvement on another welfare program that establish an income standard.
