Hawaiians Say Aloha to Higher Learning!
Through the Native Hawaiian Higher Education Program, Hawaiians get better access to an education beyond high school!
If there is a word that embodies what Hawaiians aspire for the most, that would be pono, their native term for the word "excellence". And at a time when the world spins faster towards greater progress, everyone is expected to catch up as swiftly as they can with the latest trends, discoveries, and breakthroughs that surface in every hour. Yet studies have found that of the entire Native Hawaiian Population, only 11 percent have received a college degree, a figure that could be chalked up to various factors, the most compelling of which is still poverty. How can a Native Hawaiian aim for pono in this competitive world when the doors aren't even open to him?
Recognizing the need to provide fair opportunities to everyone in the country, the government launched the Native Hawaiian Education Program, which hopes to encourage Native Hawaiians to go further on to university by providing scholarships for two- to four-year courses. The aid can either be full or partial, and awards are given on the basis of academic performance and potential, as well as on financial need.
While the program generally favors promising Native Hawaiians from a low-income background, the Native Hawaiian Education Program gives higher preference to applicants who want to pursue jobs that are underrepresented in the native community. To find out how you can qualify for this scholarship and what the requirements for candidates might be, please contact the Higher Education Programs department in the Office of Postsecondary Education, Department of Education.
