Help for Homeless Veterans

Vets who don't have a roof over their heads can get the help they need from the government!

Despite all that they've done for us, many veterans have come back from military service to find themselves displaced or unwelcome in the very country they've defended and protected. And although it's true that many former servicemen get the recognition and love they deserve, others have to come back to a place that hardly feels like home to them. In fact, studies show that at least 200,000 veterans go homeless every year; that's a whopping 43 percent of the total homeless population!

Is this any way to thank those who have risked their lives for our sake? To address this concern, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has committed itself to providing hands-on, direct aid to homeless veterans who continue to roam America's streets. Through the Health Care for Homeless Veterans Program (HCHV), homeless veterans can receive a range of services, including physical and psychiatric health exams, as well as proper medical treatment. The Homeless Eligibility Clarification Act also extends its assistance by giving benefit checks to eligible homeless veterans and helping them get an extra buck when they need it the most.

Former servicemen who might have become disabled or psychologically imbalanced because of the time they spent in the military can even get the proper medical attention and treatment through the Veterans Affairs' Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans, which also provides rehabilitation services to veterans in a residential setting. Find out more about how the government helps its homeless veterans by contacting the Veterans Affairs' Homeless Veterans Program Office in Washington, D.C.
