Helping Women Take Charge of Their Health

The WISEWOMAN Program gives poorer women an advantage over cardiovascular illness and other diseases.

Today's women are confronted with bigger challenges than ever, especially since their roles have multiplied and become more complex over the years. It's no longer unusual to find a woman who's constantly juggling her responsibilities as a wife, a mother, and a professional in her field, and she'll often accomplish all this with grace and good humor. But the demands of daily living can be too much, and many women tend to neglect themselves, ignoring even their most pressing health concerns in the end.

The Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) program helps address the health needs of women all over the country by providing them with methods and resources that can help them combat cardiovascular diseases and other related illnesses. The WISEWOMAN program is open to all low-income, under-insured or uninsured women from 40 to 64 years of age, and gives them chronic disease risk factor screening to give them a better chance of preventing or fighting cardiovascular disease.

The programs under the WISEWOMAN initiative offer a range of preventive services for poorer women, including tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Participants can even take advantage of some classes that can guide them towards pursuing healthier lifestyles, such as healthy cooking courses, fitness contests, and programs that can help women quit smoking for good.

WISEWOMAN programs are already being run on the local level in different states and tribal organizations. To find out how you can participate in any of the programs that are being offered, you can contact your nearest state office or make inquiries at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the Department of Health and Human Services.
