Last Resort Funding for Needy Americans
The General Public Assistance Program reaches out to Americans in desperate need.
If you're wondering how you can stretch your budget further while your grant applications are being processed, you'll be happy to know that the government can tide you over so you won't have to be penniless for a long while. Through a welfare program called General Public Assistance (or Public Assistance), those who are still in line for their welfare benefits can receive federal aid that can keep them afloat, even as they're waiting to qualify.
Offered in 42 states across the U.S., Public Assistance was designed to be the final option for those who are still waiting to be eligible for various government aid programs. Public Assistance is also aimed at needy Americans who, while they do not qualify for programs, are nonetheless in great need of money for food or shelter. Unlike other programs, however, Public Assistance guidelines differ from state to state, and aid money is often heavily dependent on how much the state can give or on a person's income or asset level.
In California, for example, a low-income household can receive as much as $225 in aid from the local government; Kansas residents, on the other hand, are slated to receive up to $278 a month from the Public Assistance program. If you'd like to see what your state can offer you and what the eligibility rules for the program are, check with your local welfare office or your state's Department of Social Service.
