Need Money for Your Phone Bills? Read On!
Through the Lifeline and Link-Up Programs, qualified applicants can get helpful discounts on their phone bills.
Americans everywhere are heaving a huge sigh of relief over falling gas prices and the positive effects this might have on the economy. And with some analysts predicting that fuel costs could go lower in the coming months, the future doesn't seem so bleak for the country anymore. But a lot of us still have a hard time making ends meet, and lowered gas prices won't matter much if you can't keep up with your bills and monthly payments.
To help make life easier for consumers all over the country, the Federal Communications Commission – together with your state public utility commission and local phone company – began Lifeline and Link-Up, both of which help Americans pay less for their telephone lines. Through Lifeline, qualified applicants can receive a discount on their phone bills, with at least $10 off for every participating household. Link-Up, on the other hand, can guarantee lower costs for the setting up of a new phone service in a consumer's home. Cell phone services are even covered in the Link-Up program!
While both programs are being offered all over the U.S., eligibility requirements differ from state to state, and residents of tribal lands are qualified to receive more discounts. In general, states will usually require a household to have a total income that doesn't go over 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. But because these criteria change from state to state, it's better to check your nearest state office or local phone service provider to give you further details. You can also check with the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. to find out if you qualify or to obtain more information about Lifeline and Link-Up.
