Phone Bill Discounts for Native Americans

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a program called Lifeline and Link Up to help those with low income and disability to afford telephone services. Eligible consumers save $30.00 for installation fees and up to $10 in discounts on their monthly bills.

Furthermore, if you're a Native American or living on a tribal land, you may be eligible to get even bigger discounts and pay as little as $1 every month with Lifeline and Link-Up's "Enhanced Support for Tribal Lands" program.

Here's what in store for those who are qualified:

1. One-time Installation or Activation Fee discount (up to 50% of the first $60, $70 discount for installation fees above $60, and 0% interest on deferred payment option)
2. Monthly fee discount of up to $35

To participate, you must meet the following qualifications:

• You must be currently living in:
  
  • A federally-organized Indian tribe's reservation, pueblo, colony; or
  • A former reservation in Oklahoma or within an Indian Allotment; or
  • An Alaska Native region established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
• You must be taking part in federal or state assistance programs.
• You must have an income at or below 135% of the federal Poverty Guidelines or you must be currently participating in any of these programs:
  
  • Medicaid
  • Food Stamps
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8)
  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
  • Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or
  • The National School Lunch Programs Free Lunch Program
