Tax-free Payments For Veterans
Disability and military retirement payments
If you're a veteran who suffered from injuries while you were in combat or even training for combat, you can get tax-free monthly payments from the government's Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) Program.
The US Army's CRSC Program was launched in 2003 to allow injured soldiers to receive both their Veterans Administration (VA) disability and military retirement payments. You can be eligible to apply if you have at least one VA-rated injury determined to have been combat-related, and if you meet all four of the following criteria:
Active, Reserve, or Medically retired with at least 20 years of service;
Receiving retired pay;
Retired pay is OFFSET by VA payments; and
Have 10% or greater VA rated injury.
Combat-related injuries are those that were caused by situations under these categories: Simulations of War, Hazardous Service, Instrumentality of War, or Actual Combat. If, for example, you hurt your knee during a Battalion run at a Military School, that injury would not be covered by the program since it's not combat-related.
The program is open to those who served in the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps, NOAA Corps, and the US Public Health Service.
Before you apply, make sure that you've prepared these documents:
- DD 214/215s
VA-rating decisions including the VA letter, the actual VA rating decisions and the VA code sheets
Medical records
