The Elderly May Still Be Fit To Work
Services of retired or unemployed seniors needed
More often, seniors face retirement despite their burning desire to continue on. Many had no choice but to yield and give way to younger replacements. Seeking work on their age is not easy, but there are a select few that would take them in.
An example of this is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but not without support from the Senior Environmental Employment (SEE) program. Position types available are:
- Non-typing Clerical
- messenger, receptionist, file clerk, and copy machine operator - Typing Clerical
- clerk-typist, secretarial support, and administrative assistant - Technical
- physical science technician, grant specialist, writer-editor, technical researcher, and technical writer - Professional
- engineer, scientist, and accountant
Being employed under EPA doesn’t designate the applicant under federal or organization personnel, but remains a program participant. However, common work elements like benefits, salaries, vacation and sick leaves, and other personnel concerns are provided by the organization. Federal employees only monitor program participants’ progress.
Employment under the program can either be temporary, part-time, or full time. Activities included may be:
- Doing water supply inventories
- Public information distribution
- Composing or editing EPA environmental outreach and education publications
- Identifying and classifying sanitary landfills
- Giving technical assistance
- Monitoring levels of pesticide exposure
- Observing radiation and air pollution
- Conducting school asbestos surveys
- Typing environmental legal abstract briefs
Eligible applicants are private non-profit organizations that received Title V of the Older Americans Act of 1965 designated by the Secretary of Labor. Eligible beneficiaries are retired or unemployed citizens aged 55 and above.
