More than 10 babies are abandoned by their mothers in a State per year. And many of them are done by women who take illicit substances during pregnancy or whose pregnancies were unplanned.

What becomes of the babies then? A lot of the infants conceived have inherited certain effects from these poisons and, eventually, are left helpless in hospitals or even garbage bins.

The ‘Abandoned Infants Assistance’ is a grant that funds cases like this. Its role is to prevent infants and children who have been affected by drug use before birth, have HIV, or any terminal illness. It also attends to their needs by providing support services for them and their natural families like foster family care services, case management services, family support services, respite and intervention family services, counseling services, and group residential home services. The recruitment and training of people to handle these services are also made under the program.

Applicants that are eligible are State governments, county governments, City or township governments, public and State-controlled institutions of higher education, federally-recognized tribal governments and organizations, non-profit organizations with or without IRS status, and private institutions of higher education.

This grant’s ending period is on May 27, 2008.
