Vets' Kin Can Get Free Passports
Finally visit your loved ones who perished in foreign countries.
Although losing a loved one is always a painful experience, losing a family member to war can be so much more devastating. It's even more heartbreaking if you cannot visit your deceased relative because his or her grave is in another country altogether. And now that airfare and travel expenses are soaring higher than ever, many families have little choice but to wait until they can afford to visit their beloved who perished in the war.
Unknown to many, though, the American Battle Monuments Commission can help you get a passport at no cost if you want to visit a relative's overseas grave site. Since a passport can go as high as $60 dollars now, this grant can help you save a lot if your funds are just enough for fare and lodging.
To qualify for assistance, you must be the deceased veteran's widow, parents, children, sister, brother, or established guardian. The veteran must also be buried or commemorated in permanent American military cemeteries on foreign ground. To get more information about other requirements for eligibility, you can contact the American Battle Monuments Commission in Arlington, Virginia. You can also get help from the commission if you'd like to find the best in-country routes and modes of travel available for a specific cemetery or memorial park.
